For a group ride you need five things a family tracker never had to think about: one link everybody can join, a way to approve who is in, a map of the whole group, an alert as each stop is reached, and a plan for the phone that dies halfway. Traxl Trips is built for exactly that on Android; a WhatsApp group with live location is the simple fallback; and Google Maps, Glympse and Life360 each cover part of it. Here is how to choose.

What should a group ride tracker do?

  • One join link or QR for the whole group. Nobody wants to add forty people one at a time.
  • The organizer approves who is in. A link on a forwarded message should not put a stranger on your map.
  • A live map of everyone, only while the ride is on. Location should stop when the ride ends.
  • Stops with arrival detection. “Did everyone reach Madurai?” answered by the app, not by 20 phone calls.
  • A way to handle dead phones. See why someone went quiet, and mark them as arrived.
  • Changing the route mid-ride. Riders get tired, roads close, plans change.
  • A report afterwards. Who rode how far, how fast, who was last in.
  • A back-up organizer. The person running the trip’s phone will die at some point.

“Check” means we could not confirm it from the app’s own pages; look at the current listing. There are also apps made specifically for riding clubs in India, such as Traeser, PathMate and Wolfes Club, which describe themselves as group-ride tools; we have not tested them and their terms change, so compare their listings on the same eight points above.

When is a WhatsApp group enough?

A short ride with a handful of friends who all have WhatsApp. Everybody shares live location in the group for 8 hours, and you can all see each other. It stops at 8 hours, there is no arrival detection, no record afterwards, and a rider who forgets to share is invisible.

When is Traxl Trips the better choice?

When the ride has stops, more than a few people, or anyone you would worry about. The organizer plans the route (with GPS and place search), shares one QR (as a picture, with the link), verifies each rider and starts. Each stop has a 5 km zone by default, you can add a return to the start, and the app announces each arrival and “everyone has arrived”. If a rider’s phone dies or loses permission you see the reason and can approve them. Tap any rider to see how far they are from you and open Google Maps navigation to them. Afterwards there is a report: stop-by-stop times, who was last in, distance and top speed per rider.

Limits worth knowing: joining a trip is always free, but on the free plan you can create 2 trips a month with up to 3 riders and 4 stops; Traxl Plus (₹100 a month) allows up to 50 trips a month with up to 50 riders and 15 stops. Trips are for adults. The iPhone app is coming soon, so riders on iPhone cannot join yet. Step by step: how to plan a group ride with Traxl Trips.

What about safety on the road?

A tracker tells you where people are; it does not make a ride safe. Agree a regrouping point at every stop, keep batteries topped up (Traxl shows each rider’s battery), and tell riders to exclude the app from battery optimisation first (see the battery guide). Traxl’s crash detection alerts the rider’s Circle, not emergency services, so keep emergency numbers handy.

An honest line about us: Traxl Trips is new, and on Android today (iPhone coming soon). If your whole club is on iPhone, use what works for everyone now and check back when the iPhone app arrives.
